The Common or Harbour Seal is the smaller of Ireland’s two pinniped species in Ireland. It prefers more sheltered coastal areas with sandy beaches than the larger Grey Seal. Good numbers of both species can be seen on Rathlin Island.
In 1988 and 2002/03 the European population was decimated by a viral disease, phocine distemper virus (PDV), but is now recovering.
