Red Kites probably bred in Northern Ireland until the mid-18th century. In 2008 a reintroduction programme started in County Down and there are now 20 pairs, somewhat held back by shooting and poisoning incidents. A recent report found that people visiting Dumfries and Galloway to see the region’s red kites have contributed over £8.2m to the local economy.
